Renée and Renato were a British-Italian singing duo. It was founded in the early 1980s by tenor Renato Pagliari and club singer Hilary Lester. With the single Save Your Love , the two took first place in the British single charts at Christmas 1982 .

Career

Pagliari (born June 28, 1940 - July 29, 2009) was born in Rome. In his home country he appeared as a tenor in cabaret. After moving to Great Britain, he took part in the New Faces talent competition organized by the British television station ITV in 1975 . With his appearance he drew the interest of the songwriter Johnny Edward . Together with the club singer Hilary Lester, whom he met in the Winter Gardens in Margate (Kent), the ballad Save Your Love , written by Edwards and his wife Sue, was recorded. The recording entered the UK charts in October 1982 and reached number 1, where it stayed for four weeks as a Christmas number one hit . In total, the single was sold more than half a million times. Lester was replaced by a model in the accompanying video.

With the follow-up single Just One More Kiss , the two could not repeat this success. Her third single, Jesus Loves Us All, missed the charts. After that, they both went their separate ways.

Lester had already joined a band at the time of this success and later retired into private life. Pagliari has occasionally performed as a singer in his son's restaurant in Tamworth, Staffordshire. He made a guest appearance on the comedy show Little and Large and later sang the accompaniment to a commercial for the ice cream Cornetto . He died in July 2009 at the age of 69 after complications surgical treatment for a brain tumor at Good Hope Hospital , Sutton Coldfield .
