The Republic of Benin was a one-day state in the mid-west of what is now Nigeria .

In the wake of the secession of the Biafra region from Nigeria in 1967, tensions arose in the area around Benin City . On August 9, 1967, the area was occupied by Biafras troops. Albert Nwazu Okonkwo became Biafras military administrator responsible for the region.

On September 19 of the same year, at 7:00 a.m., the "Republic of Benin" with Benin City as its capital was proclaimed in historical reference to the traditional Kingdom of Benin . It has not been recognized internationally. The next day around 1 p.m., the young republic was occupied again by Nigerian troops and thus ceased to exist.
