The Republic Hospital Klaipėda ( lit. VšĮ Respublikinė Klaipėdos ligoninė ) is a hospital with 925 beds in Klaipėda , the third largest city in Lithuania . According to its legal form , it is Viešoji įstaiga , 'public institution'. There are 1,268 employees in 24 clinical departments, including 210 doctors and 504 nurses. During the year over 28,000 patients are treated, 12,000 operations performed and 380,000 outpatient consultations given.

history

In 1931 the construction of the hospital began. In 1933 Klaipėdos Raudonojo Kryžiaus ligoninė was opened with 100 beds. There was an Internal Disease Department, a Women's Disease Department, and a Surgery Department . In 1936 an ear, nose and throat department and an ambulance were opened. There were 12 doctors and 20 nurses. 140-160 patients were treated. In 1939 the hospital was closed by the German occupying forces after the Klaipeda annexation.
