The retinacula musculorum peroneorum or retinacula peronealia ( singular : Retinaculum peroneale) are ligaments on the outside of the foot that guide the tendons of the musculus peroneus longus and the musculus peroneus brevis with their tendon sheaths around the outer ankle or secure them back and down. An injury to the ligaments can lead to total or partial dislocation of the tendons to the front and outside. A distinction is made between two parts:

  • The retinaculum musculorum peroneorum superius runs obliquely backwards and downwards from the outer ankle to the heel bone and variably to the Achilles tendon .
  • The retinaculum musculorum peroneorum inferius, as the lower, outer continuation of the retinaculum extensorum inferius, also extends obliquely back and down to the heel bone.
