Reykjanes Ridge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reykjanes Ridge (named after the Icelandic Cape Reykjanes on the Reykjanesskagi peninsula ) is the technical name for the northeastern part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between the Charlie Gibbs fracture zone at about 53 ° 0 '  N , 35 ° 0'  W , where the ridge bends to the northeast , and Iceland . It separates the Irminger Basin belonging to the Labrador Basin from the Iceland Basin to the east ; its ridge thus forms the eastern border of the Irminger Sea , which therefore belongs to the north-west Atlantic.

Submarine volcanic eruption, schematic drawing with explanations

The volcanic activity on this submarine ridge is quite high. So it happens that islands are formed here again and again during volcanic eruptions, but the majority of them are soon eroded again by the sea. However, some persist for a long time, as in the case of Eldey .

In 2007 the Seamount Njörður was discovered here by an international team of scientists .
