The Rhine overhead line crossing Koblenz – Niederwerth – Urbar is an overhead line crossing of the Rhine between Koblenz - Wallersheim , the Rhine island Niederwerth and Urbar . The overhead line has a span of 1020 meters and connects to the Koblenz substation on the west side. A special feature is that the Rhine is not crossed in one stretch, but another overhead line mast is located on the southern tip of the Rhine island Niederwerth.

construction

The overhead line, to which the Rhine crossing belongs, was built by RWE in the 1920s and was the world's first interconnector designed for 380 kV to connect the Vorarlberger Illwerke in Austria and the Schluchseewerk in the southern Black Forest with the golden mine and the Brauweiler substation in the Rhineland . The section including the Rhine crossing led in its original form from the Kelsterbach substation to the Koblenz substation to the west. Both substations were put into operation in 1926, as was the line in this area: initially in 1926 for a test with 110 kV, from October 1929 then with 220 kV. The entire line to Bludenz went into operation on April 17, 1930.

The masts originally used for the Rhine crossing were very unusual. These were the so-called C1 masts that were used continuously on the section of the line between Bad Neuenahr and Hoheneck . The basic principle is that they are constructed as barrel masts , the two lower cross members are connected to each other by two inclined struts on both sides of the masts. In contrast to all of the other C1 masts on the line, the crossing masts on the Rhine had an additional crossbeam above the conductor cables to accommodate two earth cables .

At the time of their erection, these masts were very high and represented a landmark that could be seen from afar.

modification

From 1979 to 1980 the original masts between Koblenz and Marxheim were dismantled and replaced by barrel masts for 380 kV. In the area of the Rhine crossing, the new 380 kV line was merged with a 110 kV line. However, the masts on both sides of the Rhine and on the island of Niederwerth were not completely dismantled, only the trusses including the mast tip were replaced, as can be seen in the photos. The part of the line to the east in the direction of Weißenthurm and Bad Neuenahr was dismantled at the beginning of 2009 without replacement.
