history

Club rules

Today the club is the meeting place for the elite of Canadian politics and business people in the capital. It was not until the 1970s that the restriction to male members was lifted and entry has not been denied to female guests since then.

He was one of the first clubs in North America to abolish the blackball ballot system, in which a single black ball in the ballot box prevented the admission of a new member. This system could block the admission of Jewish or colored candidates.

New members can only be proposed by existing members and are then accepted by resolution. All ambassadors and high commissioners in Ottawa are accepted as so-called "Privileged Members" for the duration of their term of office. They are allowed to use the facilities of the club like all other members, but are excluded from decisions and are not allowed to propose new members.
