The Riegerplatz in Martinsviertel.

The Riegerplatz is a central square in the Martinsviertel in Darmstadt .

history

The square was named in 1907 after Maximilian Rieger , who donated the St. Martin's Church , which was built in 1885 and is located directly next to Riegerplatz .

First used as a rally site, over time the Riegerplatz was converted into a parking lot. In a project as part of their architecture studies, Armin Schuhmacher and Andrea Dung developed a concept for redesigning the parking lot into a quarter for the Martinsviertel. The “Initiative Lebendiger Riegerplatz eV”, which was founded together with local residents, was able to convince residents and those responsible on the basis of this concept, so that in 1995 a municipal decision was made to convert the Riegerplatz. Since then, the northern part has been closed to traffic and is therefore available for events and weekly markets. A few bars and shops have settled around the square.
