As ribbing refers to a type of design for coins that are characterized by more or less closely spaced notches on the edge of the coin is distinguished. In contrast to the notch / the notch edge , the number of notches is not specifically defined. Sometimes there is also an edge writing on a coin in addition to the corrugation . The corrugation on coins is created by knurling the blanks prior to minting .

etymology

The term "Riffel" comes from the flax processing. It refers to a type of comb that was used to remove the seed pods from the flax.
