The Ripon Falls was a waterfall of the Nile in Uganda . It was near the city of Jinja and marked the natural outflow of the Nile from Lake Victoria .

On July 28, 1862, John Hanning Speke discovered it and named it after the Marquess of Ripon , who was President of the Royal Geographical Society from 1830 to 1833 . After the construction of the Owen Falls Dam in 1954 , the waterfall, located about one kilometer above the Owen Falls , sank into the reservoir and thus became part of Lake Victoria.
