Rise (headscarf)

A rise is a headscarf that was part of the clothing of women in the Middle Ages and was worn from the 13th to the 15th centuries .

The rise was a veil-like, wrinkled cloth made of fine linen that covered the wearer's cheeks, neck and chin. It was attached to the donor or in the hair at the level of the temples and was often worn with a head veil. In the late form, the rise was long and decorated with ruffles. In the higher social classes, the rise was often made of silk and provided with embroidery.
