Carl Ludwig Koch

Carl Ludwig Koch (also: Karl Ludwig Koch; born September 22, 1778 in Kusel , † August 23, 1857 in Nuremberg ) was a German forester and zoologist . He emerged primarily as an entomologist and arachnologist (insect and spider researcher).

Many first descriptions of arachnids are to him , u. a. Thanks to some South American tarantulas and numerous Central European spiders . These types are listed with the addition of CL Koch , but also only Koch . Together with Georg Carl Berendt , Koch described numerous fossil forms that have been preserved as inclusions in Baltic amber .

His son Ludwig Carl Christian Koch (1825–1908) also became an arachnologist and also described arachnids (Europe and worldwide); the species he describes have the addition of L. Koch .

In the years 1813–26, Carl Ludwig Koch initially worked as a chief forester in Burglengenfeld and later as a district forest adviser in Regensburg . There he wrote a volume of books called the System of Baierischen Zoologie (also called Fauna boica ). It covers mammals , birds , insects , arachnids and soil animals, e.g. B. Ground mites .
