Stratification (medicine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In medicine, the term stratification (also risk stratification or risk stratification ; from Latin stratum "layer", facere "to do") describes the assessment of the risk with which a disease progresses, leads to complications or death. For this purpose, risk factors are recorded that are known to be related to the progression of a disease or the occurrence of complications. Using tables, algorithms or computer programs, the individual risk of the patient is determined on the basis of the individual risk profile.

The Killip classification is used to estimate the risk of an acute heart attack, for example.
