Ro ( Greek Ρω ( f. Sg. ) (Rho), more rarely Agios Georgios (Άγιος Γεώργιος ( m. Sg. )), Turkish Karaada , Black Island) is a small uninhabited Greek island in the municipality of Megisti in the Dodecanese prefecture in eastern Mediterranean .

location

The sparsely overgrown rock island is about 120 km east of Rhodes , 5 km west of the island of Kastellorizo and less than 6 km south of the Turkish coast. With a length of 2.63 km, the maximum width is 1.1 km, the narrowest point is about 300 m. The highest elevation of the 1.476 km² island reaches 87 m in the west. Ro has two bays, Frangolimiona (Φραγκολιμιώνα) in the south and the small port of Agios Georgios with a chapel in the northwest. The islet of Tragonera (Τραγονέρα) joins in the east .

history

The island of Ro was never systematically inhabited for a long period of time. The names Rogi (Ρώγη) or Ropi (Ρόπη) have been handed down from ancient sources . A found wine press from the 4th century BC Chr. Suggests agricultural activity. Since Byzantine times, the island served as a military observation post of Rhodes together with Strongyli , east of Kastellorizo , due to its position in front of the Lycian coast . The small fortified observation post (πύργο-φρυκτωρία) was on the highest elevation and was also used during the rule of the Johanniter over Rhodes until the Ottoman period. The island is also said to have served as a base for Lambros Katsonis from 1788 to 1792.

Despina Achladioti's tomb on the island of Ro

Until 1982 there was only one Greek resident on the island, the shepherdess Despina Achladioti , the " wife of Ro " (Η Κυρά της Ρω), who hoisted the Greek flag every day from 1924 within sight of the Turkish coast and hauled in the evening. This made her a well-known Greek patriot, as Turkey claimed Ro and the neighboring islands due to their proximity to mainland Turkey. A memorial was erected for them on the neighboring island of Kastellorizo.

Today there is only a small Greek military base on Ro, and agriculture is no longer practiced on the island. The municipality of Megisti leases the island to its residents for grazing.
