The Road Construction Companies are units of the Indian Army . Its primary task is to maintain the strategically important roads in the border regions with Pakistan , China , Bangladesh , Nepal and Myanmar , as India does not have a friendly relationship with all of its neighboring countries.

This task requires a considerable amount of material and personnel, as many of these roads are either in the heights of the Himalayas or in the jungle areas of East India.

One of the most famous roads maintained by the Road Construction Companies is the Manali-Leh Highway , which runs over Taglang La at an altitude of 5300 meters.

Due to the fact that the units maintain narrow streets under the most adverse conditions, which should not be closed because of their importance, these units probably have the highest accident figures of all armed forces worldwide.
