Robert McNaught

Robert H. McNaught (* 1956 in Scotland ) is a British - Australian astronomer . He works at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Australian National University and has worked with David Asher of the Armagh Observatory .

McNaught is a dedicated observer and has discovered well over 350 asteroids . He is also a co-discoverer of the periodic comet 130P / McNaught-Hughes . As part of the Siding Spring Survey , McNaught is involved in the investigation and observation of near-Earth asteroids and comets. At the Siding Spring Observatory , in August 2006, he succeeded in discovering comet C / 2006 P1 (McNaught) , which in early 2007 became the brightest comet in decades. Comet C / 2013 A1 (Siding Spring) , which passed close by the planet Mars in 2014, was also discovered here by McNaught and has been named after the observatory ever since.

The asteroid (3173) McNaught is named after the astronomer .
