Robinson's Requiem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robinson's Requiem is a mixture of survival simulation and computer role-playing game , which was developed and published by Silmarils in 1994 . The game was released for MS-DOS , the Atari ST and the Amiga . An Atari Jaguar version was released on May 30, 2011 by Songbird Productions with the permission of the original developers.

Gameplay

In this game you control a planet explorer, a so-called Robinson, whose task it is to examine planets for their colonizability by surviving there on their own for a longer period of time. This time, the spaceship and 19 other explorers crashed on a previously unexplored planet. The aim of the game is now to escape from this planet again.

To do moves in real time by a 3D voxel -Landscape (shown varying degrees depending on the computer version, there is an AGA version for the Amiga) in which Sprite - NPCs are traveling. The main character is controlled by a menu bar in the right section of the screen, which has different functions as required, and a simple, adventure- style inventory in the lower area of the screen. Confrontations with other explorers or hostile life forms take place in real time in the current representation.

One of the special features of the game is the high simulation density of the world. Silmarils himself advertised that over 100 different parameters are observed and evaluated. This applies above all to your own figure that you control. In addition to everyday things like eating, drinking, and sleeping, you also need to take care of medical care, proper equipment, and a sensible environment. If you neglect one of these parameters, you encounter a very complex damage model, which very quickly leads to fatal results such as amputations (which you carry out yourself), blindness (even one-sided) and ultimately the death of the character. The game has one of the highest known mortality rates and at the same time the greatest possible range of causes for a virtual death.

Another special aspect is the very basic simulation display. Most of the parameters observed by the game can be influenced by your own measures. For example, temperature is a characteristic which, if the values are too high or too low, can lead to damage and illness in the main character. However, you have the option of making clothing and the like yourself to protect yourself. However, it is important to follow a logical sequence. That means, if you want to hunt, you need a weapon. To build a weapon you need basic materials. You collect them, make a weapon, make ammunition and hunt. This gives you basic materials for clothing, food and so on.

successor

Two years after Robinson's Requiem , Silmarils released a sequel, Deus . It was based on the same basic idea (the main character has to escape from a hostile planet), but is visually much more modern. Due to the high frustration factor in the first part due to the very high mortality rate, an arcade mode is offered in which most of the simulation parameters are switched off so that certain types of death such as food poisoning or the like no longer exist, so that the game is more like a first person shooter than a simulation is playing. All other basic ideas, such as the step-by-step assembly of tools, the constant monitoring of food, water, temperature and the like still existed.
