The Roloway monkey ( Cercopithecus roloway ) is a species of primate from the genus of the monkeys ( Cercopithecus ) within the family of the vervet monkeys (Cercopithecidae). It is closely related to the Diana cat and is sometimes considered to be its subspecies ( Cercopithecus diana ssp. Roloway ).
These animals differ from the Diana cats mainly in their slightly longer beard. Their fur is mostly black, as is their face. The throat and inside of the arms are white, the hips and rump are orange. The head torso length varies between 40 and 55 centimeters and their weight is between four and seven kilograms.
Roloway monkeys live exclusively in a small area in the southern parts of the Ivory Coast and Ghana . They are diurnal tree dwellers who live together in harem groups of 15 to 30 animals. The diet of these primates consists of fruits, flowers, seeds, insects and other invertebrates.
Roloway monkeys are among the most threatened primates on the African continent. Exact numbers for the species are not available, they have been observed in some forests in their range, but are considered very rare. It is estimated that their population has declined by more than 50% (possibly up to 80%) in the last three generations due to habitat destruction and hunting. The IUCN lists the Roloway monkey as "critically endangered".
There are currently 29 animals in human care in European zoos.
