Rondo (shipping)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A rondo is a maneuver to change the direction of travel of a ship in river navigation . The term is mainly used in Austria, on the German waterways the maneuver is called turning up .

Usually it is a 180 degree rotation. Since maneuvering against the current is easier than maneuvering in the direction of flow, it usually takes place before berthing on the descent or after casting off.

The turning maneuver is announced with a long tone and a short tone if the vessel is about to turn over starboard , or with a long tone and two short tones if the vessel is about to turn over port . These sound signals are valid internationally.
