Ronnie Cowan (born September 6, 1959 ) is a Scottish politician of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Cowan was born in 1959 to former Scottish national soccer goalkeeper Jimmy Cowan . He grew up in the Inverclyde area and attended Greenock Academy . After completing his schooling, he worked for various companies in the UK and Ireland . Most recently he ran his own IT company. Cowan is a father of three.

Political career

At the age of 16, Cowan joined the SNP. In the run-up to the Scottish independence referendum in 2014 , he led the pro campaign in parts of Inverclyde.

In the UK general election in 2015 , Cowan ran for the first time to national elections. The SNP placed him in his home constituency, Inverclyde , whose mandate was Labor MP Iain McKenzie . With the massive gains in votes by the SNP in these elections, Cowan won the mandate and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . There he is a member of the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee . In the early general election of 2017 , Cowan maintained his mandate by just 384 votes over the Labor candidate.
