The Kerala Red Rain was a rain event in Kerala , India during which red rain fell. The phenomenon occurred several times between July 25th and September 23rd, 2001. Official investigations assume a shower of blood , caused by a species of algae of the family Trentepohliaceae . Researchers such as B. Chandra Wickramasinghe , Milton Wainwright and physicist Godfrey Louis keep an astronomical event possible in which an extraterrestrial object, like a meteor in the atmosphere broke while extraterrestrial material brought .

Similar rain events from 2012 are known from Sri Lanka .
