In the history of the earth, the Rothell Formation is a lithostratigraphic rock unit in the Upper Carboniferous of the Saar-Nahe basin . It lies on the St. Ingbert Formation and is followed by the Sulzbach Formation . It is dated to the Westfalium B ( Upper Carboniferous or Pennsylvanian ).

Naming and conceptual history

The Rothell Formation is named after the Gewann Rothell in the urban area of St. Ingbert. A street there is called "Zur Rothell". The name appears as early as 1914 in the work of Paul Kessler as "Rotheller Flözgruppe".

Definition, Correlation and Age

The Rothell Formation comprises sandstones that are occasionally interrupted by coal seams. The lying boundary forms the base of seam 1 south, the upper boundary is the so-called claystone 5. The thickness in the Saar research well is 406 m (probably greater than the actual thickness due to thrust in the profile). Overall, the formation contains coal seams No. 81 to 72. The lower part of the formation consists of individual "fining-upward" cycles, i. H. the grain size decreases towards the top of the sequence. Individual coal seams are embedded in these sequences. They are interpreted as deposits from smaller rivers. The upper part consists of a package of coarse sandstones that can be interpreted as a delta-shaped bulk body. These sandstones are also interrupted by individual coal seams. The Rothell formation is dated according to the flora in the Westfalium C, in the STD2002, however, the formation is placed in the Westfalium B ( Duckmantium ).

structure

The Rothell Formation is subdivided into a lower and an upper Rothell Formation based on the different rock formation. Together with the St. Ingbert Formation and the Sulzbach Formation , the Rothell Formation forms the Middle Saarbrücken Group of the Saar-Nahe Basin.
