Sulzbach formation
In the history of the earth, the Sulzbach Formation is a lithostratigraphic rock unit in the Upper Carboniferous of the Saar-Nahe basin . It follows the Rothell Formation and is overlaid by the Geisheck Formation . It is dated to the Westfalium C ( Upper Carboniferous or Pennsylvanian ).
Naming and conceptual history
The name appears as early as 1914 in Paul Kessler's work as "Sulzbacher or actual fat coal group". It is named after the town of Sulzbach near Saarbrücken .
Definition, Correlation and Age
The Sulzbach formation consists of coarse sandstones, fine sandstones and pelites . The lower limit is the clay stone 5, a tufa layer. The upper limit is formed by the base of seam 2 Stolberg. Overall, the formation contains coal seams 71 to 61 and is up to 210 m thick. The clastic embankments are likely to be interpreted as delta embankments. It is dated to the Westfalium C ( Bolsovium ).
structure
The Sulzbach formation is not subdivided. Together with the Rothell Formation and the St. Ingbert Formation, it forms the Middle Saarbrücken Group.
