Geisheck Formation

In geological history, the Geisheck Formation is a lithostratigraphic rock unit in the Upper Carboniferous of the Saar-Nahe basin . It follows the Sulzbach Formation and is overlaid by the Luisenthal Formation . It is dated to the Westfalium D ( Upper Carboniferous or Pennsylvanian ).
Naming and conceptual history
The Geisheck formation is named after the Geisheck shaft near Heinitz (Neunkirchen). The name was originally introduced as Geisheck Strata and was later formally changed lithostratigraphically to Geisheck Formation.
Definition, Correlation and Age
The lower limit forms the basis of seam 1 Stolberg, the upper limit the claystone horizon 2. The formation consists of alternating coarse-sand to fine-gravel beds with pelitic intermediate layers. The layers were deposited by ramified rivers or weakly meandering rivers. The Geisheck strata are dated to Westfalium D by Schäfer, whereas the Stratigraphic Table of Germany places them in the higher part of Westfalium C ( Bolsovium ).
structure
The Geisheck Formation, together with the Luisenthal Formation and the Heiligenwald Formation, form the Upper Saarbrücken Group. It is formally lithostratigraphically not further subdivided into subformations.
Fossils
The Geisheck Formation is known for the remains of insects from dragonflies. It also contains numerous plant fossils.
