Rotting Sky is a funeral doom band founded in 2006 .

history

Tim Messing, guitarist for crustcore band Nux Vomica , founded Rotting Sky in Portland in 2006 . Messing released a number of demo recordings until he debuted in 2014 with the album Sedation on Grimoire Cassette Cvlture . After the album was reissued by Sentient Ruin Laboratories in 2018 , the attention of the project increased noticeably. The reviews of the album varied from clear pans . Daniel Müller wrote for Crossfire Metal that nothing at all happens on “Rotting Sky” despite the long tracks. No riff [be] memorable or sweeping, everything [sounded] thin, but still totally overdriven , and even if this were a demo with only ten minutes playing time, it would be decidedly too long. ”Kim Kelly judged the opposite for Vice , Sedation was "a damn good album". Michael Siebert even wrote for The Quietus that it was an album that “could be placed right next to the best Black Metal releases of the past decade”. Likewise, Sean Reveron judged for Cvlt Nation that sedation was "of really dazzling and miserable beauty". Other international reviews mostly agreed with such praising voices. From time to time, different reviewers pointed out that the listener had to open up the album, but the quality would open up after a while. Jon Rosenthal wrote for Invisible Orange that this quality is now on a completely independent level .

style

The music played by Rotting Sky is perceived as a crossover of different musical styles. As central musical elements, black metal , funeral doom and noise with influences from dark ambient , drone doom and post-rock are referred to in various places . The music moves between electronics, the rage of Black Metal and "heartbreaking sincerity". The music is filled with “honest riffs ”, which, however, are rarely in the foreground. The compositions and the rhythm are perceived as similar to Black Metal. In the meantime, the production is raw and simple, but it requires the music to be balanced. "Where there are guitar leads that any black metal classic would like, there are piano and string arrangements that can vie with them for attention."
