The history of the Royal High School (RHS) in Edinburgh can be traced back to 1128, making it the oldest school in Scotland and one of the oldest in Europe. At first the school belonged to Holyrood Abbey (see Holyrood Palace ), later it became an institution for the training of Franciscans . Until 1974 the Royal High School was a private school. Then it was taken over by the City of Edinburgh. The school is known for its strict upbringing, with school uniforms being compulsory.

When it was taken over by the City of Edinburgh in 1974, it changed from an all- boys school to a mixed school that currently has 1200 students.
