The backpack filter, also called hang-on filter or piggyback filter , is an external filter used in aquaristics . In an aquarium, it is simply attached to a pane and operated either with a submersible centrifugal pump or with a flange-mounted centrifugal pump.

Compared to a normal external filter, this filter has the advantage that it can be used without laying a hose. The filter materials used are relatively easy to change. The filter performance is comparable to that of an internal filter of the same size. In closed or cased aquariums, it can sometimes not be attached, as a recess is required to attach such a filter, which is why it is better suited for nano or smaller aquariums.
