Rudiment (drums)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rudiments are elementary basic exercises for playing on membranophones such as the snare drum . They are often part of complex rhythms, but are also practiced individually to promote the drummer's technical skills.

Sanford A. Moeller first introduced them in his textbook. The National Association of Rudimental Drummers (NARD) defined 26 exercises as "American Standard Rudiments" in the 1950s. They are mainly used for playing in military music , but some popular figures such as "Long Roll" ( vortex ), Paradiddle or Mühle have also made their way into modern rock , pop and fusion music.

The Percussive Arts Society (PAS) later added 14 more exercises to the original 26 NARD rudiments, so that today, when rudiments are spoken of, one usually means the "40 international drum rudiments".
