Runkurakay fortress

The fortress Runkurakay ( Quechua ) was a rest and supply base (“ Tambo ”) with a strategic view of the surrounding area on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu .

The ruins are located at an altitude of 3,720 m, not far from the “Abra de Runkurakay” pass (3970 m above sea level). The structure consists of two concentric and sloping walls that surround the chambers and the courtyard. Archaeologists suspect that Runkurakay was a resting place (tambo) for messengers, as the construction consists of several dormitories and stables for the animals.
