Runway Awareness & Advisory System

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Runway Awareness and Advisory System (RAAS) is a computer system developed by Honeywell International to assist pilots. It gives the crew acoustic cues with regard to runways and is primarily intended to encourage the flight crew to compare the targeted runway with the runway assigned (or released) by air traffic control in order to avoid mix-ups.

Modes

The runway 07R serves as an example

  • Mode 1, approaching runway / approaching runway - English approaching runway

Notice message: "APPROACHING ZERO SEVEN RIGHT", then "ON RUNWAY ZERO SEVEN RIGHT", on the navigation display "APP 07R" and "ON 07R"

On the ground: If the machine leaves the holding point and drives onto the runway, the corresponding notification is given acoustically and visually.

On approach: During the final approach in the so-called glide path of the respective runway, the warning message is issued.

  • Mode 2, Unsafe approach - English unstable approach

Notice message: "UNSTABLE, UNSTABLE" "TOO HIGH, TOO HIGH" "TOO FAST, TOO FAST"

If the glide path deviation is too great or if the aircraft exceeds the approach speed outside the tolerance for a safe landing (eng. Unstable landing), a corresponding message is issued.

  • Mode 3, approach to taxiway - English taxiway landing

Notice message: "CAUTION TAXIWAY, CAUTION TAXIWAY"

If the aircraft threatens to aim for a landing on a taxiway , the warning sounds in the cockpit.

  • Mode 4, long landing (see landing ) - English long landing

Notice message: "LONG LANDING, LONG LANDING"

When practicing a long landing (planned touchdown far behind the touchdown point), a message including information about the remaining runway length in feet (depending on the programming also in meters) is given.

  • Mode 5, start without flap configuration - English takeoff without to config

Notice message: "FLAPS, FLAPS"

If the aircraft is on a runway without the lift aid in the take-off configuration, the warning message is issued.

  • Mode 6, take off on taxiway - English taxiway takeoff

Notice message: "ON TAXIWAY, ON TAXIWAY"

If the machine exceeds a speed of 41 knots outside the runway, the warning will sound.
