Runway Visual Range

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Runway visual range (RVR, dt. " Start / runway visual range ') is in the aviation meteorology , the distance of over which a pilot of an aircraft on the center line of the take off or landing web , the markings can be seen to limit the web or the center line. Runway Visual Range is given in feet or meters . The RVR is only reported in the DWD when visibility is less than 1,500 meters.

RVR is an important minimum criterion for instrument arrivals and departures. The RVR, if it is published in the AIP , must at least be available, otherwise the instrument approach and departure cannot be carried out. The RVR is published either via METAR , standardized, short weather reports from the airfields, or transmitted by radio to aircraft that are approaching or taking off at an airfield.

RVR is measured instrumentally with so-called transmission meters, which determine the runway view according to the extinction law.
