Ryal is the name for some English and Scottish gold and silver coins from the 15th to 17th centuries. Century. The name is derived from the Spanish real coin. Ryal also occurs as the spelling of Rial coins (from Persian and Arabic riyāl ), which are also derived from the Spanish real.

There are the following English / Scottish ryals:

  • Rose Noble ( Rosennobel ; 1464-1470), a form of the English Noble gold coin (7.76 g rough weight , 7.73 fine weight );
  • Scottish Ryal (1555–1558; Maria Stuart ) gold coin with the portrait of Maria Steward (7.63 rough; 6.99 g fine);
  • Scottish Ryal (1565–1567; Maria Stuart and Prince Consort Henric ) in silver (30.59 g rough; 28.4 g fine); 2/3 and 1/3 Ryal coins were also struck;
  • Sword dollar, (1567–1582; Jacob VI. ) Scottish ryal in silver (30.39 g gross weight), from 1582 with a different design;
  • Rose Ryal ("Rosenryal"; 1616–1619; James I (England) ), English gold coin worth 1 1/2 Sovereign (13.74 g fine); half rose Ryal were also called Spur Ryal , as the sun's image on the coin resembled a wheel.

A Maria & Henric-Ryal from 1566 was included in the collection of Anton Günter II , Count von Schwarzburg-Arnstadt, and is included in the "Alte Taler" catalog of the former Gotha Coin Cabinet.
