Síol Anmchadha

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Síol Anmchadha was a sub-kingdom or duchy of the Hy-Many in Ireland and was ruled by a sideline of the Ui Maine called Síol Anmchadha ('the seed of Anmchadh'), hence the name of the landscape.

In its greatest extension, the kings of Síol Anmchadha ruled the land west of Lough Derg up to the border with Thomond , the land between the Rivers Shannon and Suck and an area called Lushmagh on the other side of the Shannon towards Birr .

The ruling dynasty later adopted the name Ó Madadháin, which was then Maddan or Madden in English. In the later Middle Ages the rulers were vassals of the Earl of Ulster and their successors, the Clancardes.

The name Síol Anmchadha has survived to this day in the place name Baile Mór Síol Anmchadha, today's Lawrencetown in Galway.
