Features of the dialect

Yemeni Arabic (similar to Syrian Arabic ) comes extremely close to standard Arabic ( Fus'ha ), i.e. the general written Arabic language, but it also has some characteristics that distinguish it from the standard language. The Yemeni dialect is closely related to the dialect of Saudi Arabia. Peter Behnstedt did research on the North Yemeni dialects - there is not just one Yemeni dialect - and compiled a linguistic atlas (Wiesbaden 1985). After Ettore Rossi (1939), Hamdi Qafîsheh also examined the dialect of San'â '(1993).

Like all dialects, Yemeni Arabic is only spoken; standard Arabic is generally used for correspondence. However, here too there is a tendency to write the dialect in writing. B. in some Internet forums, in which some users write in the Arabic dialect (but often in the Latin alphabet ). However, this written form of Yemeni Arabic is not spelling nor has it any official status.
