The atonement cross is located directly on the cemetery wall of the St. Afra Church in Betzigau in the Allgäu .

history

At Candlemas in 1577 (February 2, 1577) Max Möst from Betzigau went home from Kempten . He had drunk quite a bit and was arguably challenging to the townspeople. A citizen and his servant mistreated the drunk man so badly that he died at home the following day.

After three months the manslaughter was tried in the pub in Betzigau. The Kempten citizen Jörg Frei was convicted. Among other things, he had to pay the father of the slain a fine of 92 florins . From the first installment of the fine, the father had to erect the atonement cross.
