S. Yaroslavtsev

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

S. Jaroslawzew ( Russian С. Ярославцев ) is a pseudonym of the Soviet or Russian writer Arkadi Strugazki (1925–1991). Arkadi published most of his works together with his brother Boris under their real names Arkadi and Boris Strugazki and used the pseudonym S. Jaroslawzew for three works he wrote alone:

Publ. Original title shape German title
1974-1984 Экспедиция в преисподнюю SF adventure novel for children Expedition to hell
1984 Подробности жизни Никиты Воронцова novel From the life of Nikita Vorontsov
1992 Дьявол среди людей novel A devil among people

Reasons for publication as S. Yaroslavtsev

Although published at different times, all three works by “S. Yaroslavzew ”conceived by the Strugatski brothers between 1972 and 1975. During this phase, the brothers had significant problems with Soviet censorship and it was hardly possible for them to publish under their familiar name. The brothers used several pseudonyms in the course of their work, and they were able to keep S. Yaroslavtsev's secret for an unusually long time.

Arkadi Strugazki therefore "defused" the conception developed jointly by the two brothers for an animated film called "Chase in Space", which had been rejected by the relevant Soviet authorities, in the form of a fairy tale and published it under the pseudonym S. Jaroslawzew and the Title expedition to hell . Successful: the discarded material actually appeared in a youth magazine from 1974.

Similarly, the 2nd publication by S. Jaroslawzew, From the life of Nikita Voronzow : Arkady Strugazki wrote a non-censorship-appropriate material by both brothers in the form in which "one could write at that time" - so Boris Strugazki after Arkadi's death.

The last work by S. Jaroslawzew, Ein Teufel unter den Menschen , had a different genesis : a material roughly sketched by both brothers in 1975 was discussed again by both in 1990, after the Soviet censorship period, but only completed by Arkadi and named S. Yaroslavzew published shortly before his death. One background for the use of the now well-known pseudonym was that both brothers agreed not to use the author's name "Strugazki", which is known as a unit, for each individual work. Boris Strugazki used a pseudonym for the works he wrote alone: S. Witizki .
