The class 17 vehicles of the South African Railways (SAR) were steam locomotives with a 2'D wheel arrangement.

In 1926 there was a shortage of shunting locomotives at the SAR. For this reason, 21 were tank locomotives of class A with a Tender equipped. The locomotives of the former Natal Government Railways built by Dübs and Company were built between 1888 and 1899.

The trailing axle of the tank locomotives and the coal box were removed during the renovation and the frame was shortened accordingly. The three-axle tenders came from decommissioned steam locomotives. The locomotives in the front part remained practically unchanged; the side water tanks were also retained.

The locomotives were given the new numbers 1415–1435. They were used in shunting in and around Durban and Port Elizabeth and were retired by 1961. No copy has survived.
