The vehicles of the class FD of the South African Railways (SAR) were articulated locomotives of the Modified Fairlie type . The locomotives were intended for secondary lines with axle loads of around 12.5 t; the axis order was (1'C1 ') (1'C1').
Like the somewhat lighter classes FC and GC , the class FD agreed with the Garratt class GD , which was developed in parallel, in all essential dimensions, so that the SAR could compare both types of joint with one another.
The four FD class locomotives were retired between 1957 and 1959, about ten years before the GD-Garratts. The stress on the pivot pins caused by the overhangs had led to higher maintenance costs than the latter.
