SG Überruhr

The Spielgemeinschaft Überruhr ( SG Überruhr ) is the handball club in Essen with the largest number of members . It was founded in 1974 through a cooperation between TB Überruhr and HSV Überruhr. In 2017, four men's, six women's and 12 youth teams played for the SGÜ.

Men's handball

With the promotion of the first men in 1978 to the regional league (6th league level), SG Überruhr began to push sporting goals and thus laid the foundation for a successful development. In 1981 he was promoted to the association league. For decades, after the direct relegation of the syndicate, it managed to establish itself in the state league. In the 2010/2011 season, under coach Bernd Vatter, they were promoted to the Association League for the last time, but the team was relegated again in the 11/12 season. For the 2016/2017 season, the team again made it to the top division. For the 2017/2018 season, the team earned relegation in the league.

Women's handball

The first women's team has been in the top league for years. In the 2011/2012 season, the team took third place and only just missed promotion to the 3rd division. As a result, the 2nd women, who won the Association League sovereignly, could not rise.

The first women's team achieved a milestone in 2011 when they took part in the main round of the DHB Cup .

Youth handball

The youth department of SG Überruhr has had many successes in recent years. In addition to numerous district championship titles, many teams managed to play successfully in the highest leagues in the Lower Rhine handball association.
