SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions ( SIMPLE ) is an Internet standard that supplements the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) , which is actually intended for Internet telephony , with instant messaging and presence information . The protocol came out of beta in 2001.
