SWIFT participant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The customers registered with SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) are participants in this network. These are mainly banks and bank-related companies from all over the world, but there are also more and more companies that have a BIC.

A distinction is made between active and passive participants:

  • Active participants are those who are directly connected to one of the SWIFT computers via a data link .
  • Passive participants have a Business Identifier Code (BIC) with SWIFT, but they are not connected to the computer and cannot be contacted directly via SWIFT. Such banks are mostly investment banks, specialty banks with no special reference to foreign countries or banks that conduct their international business through an association.

The passive members can be recognized by the fact that the eighth position of their BIC is the number 1, while active participants have another character as the eighth position (number or letter). A BIC must always have eight or eleven digits. The digits nine to eleven indicate the branch or department (branch code) and, if not assigned by the respective member, can be omitted or replaced with XXX.

example
SWIFT Attendees
PBNK DE FF Postbank (active participant, since the eighth digit is not a one)
GENO DE F1 S09 Sparda-Bank (passive participant, since the eighth digit is a one)

Test BICs have the number 0 in the 8th position.
