Saab MFI-15 Safari , also known as Saab MFI-17 Supporter , is a training aircraft for military pilots.

History and construction

Super Mushshak from the Pakistan Air Force

The aircraft engineer Björn Andreasson developed the BA-7 as a light aircraft at Convair in 1958. After moving to AB Malmö Flygindustri (MFI) again, he developed the MFI-9 Junior . The Swedish Flygvapnet was proposed in 1963 the "MFI-9B Mil-Trainer" as a light combat aircraft and basic trainer. Carl Gustaf von Rosen shipped five of the machine now known as the “FPL-801” to Gabon in 1969 and from there actively used them in the Biafra War . In order to avoid damage when operating on unpaved slopes , the normal tail was changed to a cross tail with a raised horizontal tail. The first flight of the Saab MFI-15 with a few further modifications and a Lycoming IO-320 with 160 PS (approx. 120 kW) was on July 11, 1969, the series production with Lycoming IO-360 began in 1971. From 1981 onwards, the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) built in Kamra 92 MFI and from 1983 a further 149 as "Mushshak" under license. Including the improved variant MFI-395 "Super Mushshak" built there from 1995, 343 MFI aircraft were built in Pakistan by the end of 2019.

A composite variant was tested in the 1980s as the MFI-18 but was not sold.
