Saffiatou Singhateh

Saffiatou Kassim Singhateh (also Safiatou or Safiatu , born in Gambia ) is a Gambian women's rights activist .

Life

Singhateh studied Women's Studies, Social Policy and Administration in Canterbury and Swansea University .

From the early 1980s she was active in the women's movement and headed a pilot project for Women in Development at the World Bank . By 1989 she was the director of the Women's Bureau . From the mid-1980s she became involved in the women's rights organization GAMCOTRAP ( Gambia Committee on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children ), which campaigns against female genital mutilation , among other things .

In 1991 she co-founded the Foundation for Research on Women's Health, Productivity and the Environment (BAFROW) and became its director around 1994. From 1994 she worked for the women's rights organization FEMNET (also known as the African Women's Development and Communication Network ) as a coordinator. From 1995 to 1997 or 1998 she was its director.

Around 1998 she was Regional Coordinator for Women's Health for the World Health Organization (WHO). From about 2002 until at least 2008, it was for the Population Fund of the United Nations ( English United Nations Population Fund , UNFPA) operates.

The fight against female genital mutilation is a focus of her activities .
