Sagano Kankō Tetsudō KK ( Japanese 嵯峨野 観 光 鉄 道 株式会社 , ~ Kabushiki-gaisha , English Sagano Scenic Railway ) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the West Japan Railway Company (JR West), which runs between Kyoto and Kameoka the Sagano Torokko Ressha ( 嵯峨野 ト zwischen コ 列車 , "Sagano-Lorenzug", English Sagano Romantic Train ) operates on the Sagano Kankō-sen ( 嵯峨野 観 光線 , Sagano Scenic Line ).
history
The winding route through the Hozu Gorge was originally a section of the route from Kyoto to the north, opened in 1899. Long-distance trains are now running on a new electrified double-track line of the Japanese National Railways (JNR), which opened in 1989. With a less winding route, it bypasses the small radii and narrow tunnels of the old route.
Since then, the old route has been used for tourist traffic. To begin with, four historic half-open wagons pulled by a diesel locomotive were used.
The concept was more successful than originally expected, so a fifth completely open car was introduced. Contrary to what its nickname The Rich ( ザ ・ リ ッ チ , Za Ritchi , "the Rich") suggests, it consists of a converted freight car, so that the journey is often perceived as windy and a little uncomfortable.
Combined with rafting on the Hozu, the 25-minute train ride is one of the area's main tourist attractions.
business
Trains run between Torokko Saga and Torokko Kameoka stations. Seats must be reserved and tickets are sold up to a month in advance. Some tickets are also sold on site on the day of the journey. It is not possible to drive in an open The Rich car on rainy days. Trains to Kameoka also carry passengers who choose to return by boat on the Hozu River to Arashiyama. As a result, trains from Kameoka to Saga are usually less frequented.
