Kameoka is an old castle town with the Kameyama Castle . The Katahara last resided there with an income of 50,000 koku until 1868.
Until 1869 the place was called Kameyama ( 亀 山 , dt. "Turtle Mountain") and was then renamed to Kameoka ("Turtle Hill"). Today's community was created on January 1, 1955 from the merger of the former district community ( chō ) Kameoka with another 15 villages ( mura ) in the district of Minamikuwada . On September 30, 1959, the last village of Shino was incorporated, which at the same time the district was dissolved.
