Samuel Rowbotham ( Samuel Birley Rowbotham, pseudonym Parallax ; * 1816 , † December 23, 1884 in London ) was the founder of the Zetetic Society , a forerunner organization of the Flat Earth Society , which propagated a flat earth .

In 1849 he published a 16-page pamphlet in which, based on his interpretation of some passages of the Bible, he took the idea that the earth was not a sphere. He later developed his theory and published the 221-page book Zetetic Astronomy: Earth Not a Globe in 1865 . Another edition of the book published in 1881 had 430 pages. Rowbotham believes that the earth is a flat disk with the North Pole at its center. The sun is less than 4,000 miles from London.

After Rowbotham's death, his numerous associates formed the Universal Zetetic Society and published a journal called The Earth Not a Globe Review . Rowbotham and his followers were known for numerous public debates with leading scientists . The society remained active until the 20th century; However, their popularity declined significantly after the First World War. Rowbotham's ideas were later promoted by the Flat Earth Society . They have been becoming increasingly popular again since 2015 due to their spread on the Internet.
