Sankaku waza

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sankaku waza or Sankaku tai denotes the stable 'T-position' in Aikidō , in which Tori's front foot points to Uke , while the rear foot is inclined. This position creates a force triangle that points to Uke and allows Tori to move variably in order to absorb and redirect the force impulse from Uke without losing its own center.

The power triangle is dynamically related to Uke and can be assumed in Omote or Ura depending on the position of the foot . In Omote Sankaku , the heel of the front foot points to the heel of the rear standing foot, whereby a force triangle forms on the stomach side of the standing person. In Ura Sankaku , the heel of the front foot points to the toes of the rear foot and forms a force triangle in the back of the standing person. Hara remains above the body's center of gravity. Because the power triangle is not only created from the geometric static position or foot position, but from the entire body posture. The Omote and Ura Sankaku positions each support a high level of stability, a high degree of freedom of movement for all extremities and the possibility of optimal body control in movement.

These positions can be recognized mainly in sword fighting movements, since the dynamics of the relationship between attacker and defender make rapid changes of position mutually necessary.
