The Cathedral

The Saint Michael's Cathedral ( Russian Свято-Михайловский собор ) is a Russian Orthodox cathedral in the city of Izhevsk in Russia . The cathedral, which was built in 1907 and destroyed in 1937, was reconstructed from 2004 to 2007 in the city center.

history

In the place where the cathedral is today, a chapel dedicated to the Trinity was built in 1765 , which was converted into a church in 1784. It was destroyed by fire in 1810. A new church dedicated to the Archangel Michael was built in 1855 in the neo-Byzantine style . It was 30 meters high.

In 1867, money was started to be raised for the construction of a Saint Michael's Cathedral in another square in the city. The Izhevsk factory workers decided in 1893 to donate one percent of their wages to the construction project. The city's building committee decided in 1896 that the new church building must not be larger than the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral . Construction finally began in 1897 and ended in 1907. Due to the Russian Revolution , further improvements to the building could not take place, so it was only consecrated on November 4, 1915.

On March 19, 1929, the city administration decided to close the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and St. Michael's Cathedral. It was closed by the police on March 27th. From 1932 to 1937 the building housed the regional museum of local history before the demolition of the cathedral was announced on April 8, 1937.

The decree for the reconstruction of the cathedral was adopted on February 11, 2000 by the government of the Udmurt Republic . The foundation stone was laid in May 2004 and the reconstructed building was consecrated by Patriarch Alexius II on May 16, 2007 .

architecture

The cathedral is a richly structured central building made of red ashlar with a central dome and four corner towers and four other small towers with domes. The total height to the cross of the central dome is 67 meters.
