The Romanesque church of Sant Sepulcre de Palera

Sant Sepulcre de Palera is a Romanesque church in the Catalan village of Beuda , near the town of Besalú .

History of the church

Interior of the Sant Sepulcre de Palera church

A previous building of today's church was first mentioned in 977. From 1075, the Counts of Palera Arnau Gonfred and his wife Bruneguilda had the current church built. In 1085 the church was consecrated by the Bishop of Girona Guifre, accompanied by the Bishops of Carcassonne, Narbonne, Magalona and Barcelona. Since a similar remission of sins was granted in the monastery as at the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, many pilgrims to St. James who came via the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes visited the place. In 1107 the church was handed over to the custody of the monastery of Grassa, who converted the place into a smaller Benedictine abbey. From the 16th century the monastery was alternately subordinate to the monasteries in Besalú and Banyoles . From the 16th century, Saint Dominic was especially venerated in this monastery. In 1835 the church was secularized. Currently the church is looked after by the brotherhood "Sant Sepulcre de Girona" (Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulcher in Girona).

Art historical aspects

The church consists of three naves with three apses. The central nave is covered by a barrel, the side aisles are covered by quarter-circle vaults. The bell wall above the west facade has two bells. A Galilea, a small pre-church, stood in front of this west facade until the late 1950s. This was destroyed during ineptly executed restoration work in 1957. Almost nothing remains of the Claustrum and the monks' residential complexes. Only a few capitals of the old monastery can still be visited.
