Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority ( VTA ) - Transport Association Santa Clara Valley - is a Zweckverband ( special-purpose district ), which for transport planning and their mortgage in Santa Clara County of the US state of California is responsible.

The transport association was created on January 1, 1973 from the takeover of three then bankrupt bus companies as the Santa Clara County Transit District , based on a vote of 6 June 1972. On January 1, 1995, the transport association was merged with the Congestion Management Agency of Roads and received the name Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority , but the original abbreviation SCVTA was soon further shortened to VTA. In 1996 it was decided by a vote of the voters to finance the local transport with taxpayers money ( Measure A ), the regulation originally decided for 10 years was extended to 30 years by another vote in 2000.

The tax funding was originally aimed at expanding the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) public transportation system in Silicon Valley , but allowed additional transportation to be set up. The VTA is co-owner of the Caltrain Regiozuges and operates several local transport systems, including the VTA Light Rail light rail system. In 2008, the budget was $ 363 million and employs approximately 2,100 people in its subsidiaries.
